DENVER - The city and county of Denver wants to plant 1 million trees in the eight-county metro area by 2025. The initiative is called the Mile High Million.
To grow the program Denver Parks and Recreation launched a TreeBank on its Web site this week.
TreeBank is a web-based tool that enables communities to develop a specific fund for tree planting, care and education.
Citizens can visit http://www.greenprintdenver.org/trees/support.php to donate to the program.
The Mile High Million will give the first month of donations to the Windsor, to help the town recover from the May tornado damage. Donations received between now and July 10 will be given to Windsor Parks department staff.
"The recent tornado in Windsor destroyed not only homes, but many of the surrounding trees," said Sara Davis, Tree by Tree – The Mile High Million program coordinator. "Working with our partners and funders, we look forward to donating our first month of TreeBank donations. Although Windsor is outside our Tree by Tree focus area, it is important to us to extend our friendship and help them rebuild their urban forest for the future."
"TreeBank offers a great way to build resources for our local treeplanting efforts as well as an opportunity to help Windsor, our neighbor to the north, restore their tree canopy in the aftermath of last month's tornado," added Mayor John Hickenlooper. "It's the least we can do for a community that's been through so much."
Tree by Tree – the Mile High Million is part of Greenprint Denver, supported and housed in Denver Parks and Rec. Numerous studies have shown that trees help reduce greenhouse gases that cause global warming, control erosion, prevent water runoff, and provide natural cooling to buildings and pavement.
Over 68,000 trees were planted in the first year of the program.
