Fresh City Life Green Series
March 8, 2007
This spring, the Denver Public Library's Fresh City Life program and Greenprint Denver are sponsoring an exciting series of films, speakers, workshops, crafts and more about global warming, renewable energy, sustainability and other green topics.
The series kicks off on March 27 with a free showing of the movie, Fed Up!, a hilarious and disturbing look into the biotech industry, genetic engineering, and the future of our nation's food supply. Four additional feature films will be shown on Tuesday evenings at Denver Open Media Studios, including Blue Vinyl on April 3, An Inconvenient Truth on April 10, Who Killed the Electric Car on April 17, and Baraka on April 24.
On March 31, L. Hunter Lovins, president and founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions, Inc., will discuss how the environmental impact of global warming is driving social change, and how businesses can find opportunities.
Several other speakers will share their insights and expertise over the six-week period, including Ed Ziegler, Professor of Law for the University of Denver, who will discuss sustainable development issues and effective growth management options; Dr. Kirk Johnson, Vice President and Chief Curator of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, who will present a perspective on climate change throughout earth's history; Dave Wann, author of Superbia! 31 Ways to Create Sustainable Neighborhoods and Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic; and author Dan Chiras, who will outline strategies that homeowners can adopt for achieving energy independence.
Hands-on workshops are also included: Gardeners can learn about low-water xeriscaping methods, natural pesticide solutions, composting and more. Kids can enjoy an environmental program from REI on how to camp and hike without leaving a trace; play, sing songs and tell stories about ladybugs; and even make their own soap. Plus, there will be craft demonstrations on homemade cleaning and bath products, knitting with recycled fibers, making pillows from recycled T-shirts, and collage-making with recycled paper from books. A variety of health, wellness and cooking classes round out the activities.
Closing the series, Mayor John Hickenlooper will host a very special evening with Laurie David, producer of the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, starring Al Gore, at 7 p.m. on May 3 at the Colorado Convention Center. In addition to founding the Stop Global Warming Virtual March, David has released her first book, The Solution is You: Stop Global Warming - An Activist's Guide.
